However, later the Germans decided to select 3,000 women for labor in Germany, while the rest were sent to the gas chambers. During this selection, Judith encountered Dr. Mengele, who directed her to the left, toward death, while sending her sister, Ruchel, to the right, toward labor and life. As the women stood naked during the selection, Ruchel recognized Judith by a scar on her back and realized her sister had been placed in the death line.

These notes gave Judith and the others hope.

On May 5, 1945, Judith was liberated by the Americans in Germany. After her liberation, she traveled to France and reconnected with relatives in America. From France, she and her family first moved to Colombia in South America and later immigrated to the United States, where Judith eventually met her husband.
