Erika Salczer

Erika, along with her grandparents, walked through the woods to Hungary in the middle of the night.

In Hungary, Erika started school for the first time, enrolling in first grade. The family stayed there until July 1944, at which point Erika returned to Nitra to reunite with her parents. In September 1944, the Nazis declared Nitra "Judenrein" (free of Jews), and Erika and her sister went into hiding with non-Jewish families.

She moved to London, where she lived with relatives after the war. In 1948, Erika left for England, and in 1949, she emigrated to Canada. Her uncle, who had moved to London, became the Rosh Yeshivah in Montreal. Erika lived in Montreal until 1954, when she got married and moved to New York.

Her husband was also a sole survivor of his family and was ten years older than her. He had endured time in concentration camps during the war.
