Claire Grunwald

In the early years of the war, Claire did not notice many changes, but over time, antisemitism became more evident. Non-Jewish neighbors stopped socializing with Jews, and antisemitic policies began to take effect.

When Claire was 12, the war reached her town. She and her family were sent to the Debrecen ghetto and later deported to the Strasshof labor camp near Vienna, Austria.

After the war ended, they were sent to a displaced persons (DP) camp in Germany.

Sadly, her father and youngest sister did not survive the war. Although Claire initially wanted to move to Palestine, her family eventually relocated to America. Despite the horrors she endured, Claire maintained her faith throughout and believed she would survive.
