Ella Joskowicz was born Dec 2, 1926, in Zdunska Wola, Poland. Her parents, Hella and Berek, and sisters, Zosia and Lola, were her family. Their peaceful life ended Sept 1, 1939, when Germans invaded. They were moved to the Zdunska Wola ghetto.

Ella lost her sister, Lola, there. Then they moved to the Lodz Ghetto. Ella, Zosia, and their mother worked. Her father, too ill, starved. Two years later, they were sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Then Ella and Zosia did a death march to Bergen-Belsen.

After months of labor and poor conditions, Ella got typhus. She was separated from Zosia and put in a typhus ward. A British soldier found her and took her to a Red Cross hospital. Zosia died, leaving Ella alone.

Ella applied to immigrate to South America with another survivor. The survivor was reunited with her brother, Stefan. Stefan and Ella married in 1946. They lived in Germany for four years, then moved to Minneapolis in 1948.

In 1965, they moved to California for a warmer climate.
