David was born on December 3, 1927, in Lodz, Poland, to Abraham and Sarah. He was raised in a loving, orthodox Jewish household, surrounded by over 100 extended family members. David had a younger brother, Nathan. As a child, David was friendly and enjoyed soccer.

Despite antisemitism, he was often called a “God-damn Jew.” On September 1, 1939, German planes attacked Lodz. David's family was resettled to the Strykow Ghetto. In 1942, the Strykow Ghetto was liquidated, and residents moved to the Lodz Ghetto. His mother, Sarah, was sent back, while David and Nathan were selected for “resettlement.”

Sarah rejoined to stay with them, but vanished. David ran back to the ghetto. He worked in a clothing factory, becoming a tailor. In 1944, the ghetto was evacuated. David joined “The White Guard” to stay behind. They were taken to Auschwitz, then Dachau Kaufering. In December 1944, they were moved again.

American jets attacked; guards fled. American soldiers arrived, freeing them. One soldier spoke Yiddish. After the war, David moved to Sweden. He found his father in Poland. Only they survived out of 100 relatives. In 1954, David immigrated to the United States, settling in Pittsburgh and then Los Angeles.

He is the father of three daughters, grandfather to seven, and great-grandfather to six.
