Marion was born in Karlsrühe, Germany, in 1932, just before Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor of the Third Reich. Her parents, Kurt and Alice Deichmann, faced increasing challenges as the political climate worsened. In 1934, when Marion’s father lost his job, the family made the difficult decision to move to Luxembourg.

However, the situation continued to deteriorate, and Marion’s father eventually escaped to Brazil with his parents.
Marion and her mother fled to Brussels, trying to reach Marion’s grandmother in Paris. They found a truck driver willing to sneak them across the border into France, and they successfully made it to Paris. However, in July of 1942, Alice was arrested during the Vel D'Hiv Roundups when Marion was just nine years old.

Alice was taken to Drancy and then to Auschwitz-Birkenau, and Marion never saw her mother again.
After her mother’s arrest the French Resistance took Marion away. She was moved from place to place until a social worker found her a home with the Parigny family in Normandy. When D-Day arrived, the family hid in the countryside to avoid the bombings. The Parigny family’s home and the café they owned were destroyed, along with most of their village.

When the war in France finally ended, Marion returned to Paris, where she was reunited with her grandmother and uncle. In 1947, the family immigrated to New York. Marion lived in the United States for many years, marrying and having children before eventually returning to France. Throughout the years, she maintained contact with the Parigny family, who were recognized as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem in 2015.

In 2019, Marion moved back to the U.S. to be closer to her children and now resides in Chicago. Her book, Her Name Shall Remain Unforgotten, is dedicated to her mother and is available in English, French, and German. Additionally, Marion's virtual reality film, Letters from Drancy, will be showcased in the Museum’s virtual reality gallery, The Journey Back: A VR Experience, beginning in October 2023.
