Emanuel Mandel was born May 8, 1936, in Riga, Latvia. From 1936 to 1944, he lived in Budapest, Hungary. His father was a cantor, his mother a teacher. He attended school for first and second grade. During WWII, Budapest was bombed. In 1944, he and his family were deported to Bergen-Belsen. His father was in Labor Battalions.

In March 1944, Eichmann arrived in Hungary. In July, Emanuel and his mother were sent to Bergen-Belsen.
In December 1944, they were released to Switzerland. In September 1945, Emanuel went to Palestine. In March 1949, he arrived in the United States. He attended high school in Philadelphia and college.

He worked for B'nai B'rith Youth Organization for 15 years, in Cleveland, Detroit, and Washington. In 1984, he started a psychotherapy practice, retiring in 2014. Emanuel and his wife married in 1958. They have two children and three grandchildren.
