Doris Ruth Fischl was born Jan 10, 1929, in Prague. Her parents, Kamil and Lily, were well-off. Her brother, Robert, was born in 1931. They lived in Klíčany, a village north of Prague. Her family owned a large farm with 30-40 workers.

The farm grew various crops and raised livestock. They had luxuries like servants and a modern farmhouse. Doris enjoyed a privileged childhood, learning skills and sports. Though Jewish, they blended traditions, celebrating Christmas too.

At eight, Doris moved to Prague for school. She learned languages and academics. As Europe neared war, they considered leaving. They couldn’t sell the farm in time. Relatives who stayed were killed. Her father moved valuables abroad.

In 1939, Nazis occupied Czechoslovakia. Their farm became a base for Czech pilots. Horses were taken. At 10, Doris couldn’t go to school. Her father got a visa to Palestine, but needed an exit visa. A German officer helped him get it.

They packed and left for Trieste. In 1940, they boarded the Jerusalem for Haifa. They settled on Mount Carmel. Her father worked as a caretaker, then a driver. Doris went to an agricultural school and joined a Zionist group.

During Israel's War of Independence, she stayed with her group. She met her husband, Meir, and had her first child. In 1957, they moved to the US to reunite with family.
